What size should a book cover be?

Choose the right ebook cover dimensions and understand paperback trim size, spine width and bleed. Includes a Kindle example and a print-file checklist.

There is no single book cover size that works for every edition. An ebook needs a front image measured in pixels. A paperback needs a wrap built around the final trim size, page count and printing specifications. Choose the publishing route before setting up the canvas: stretching a finished cover into a different shape is rarely a good fix.

Quick answer: ebook image or full print wrap?

Do not send a small shop thumbnail as a production file. Keep the high-resolution artwork and an editable layout, then export a separate version for each destination. If you have not chosen a publishing route, compare self-publishing platforms first.

Kindle ebook cover dimensions

Amazon’s ebook cover guidance recommends 1600 pixels wide by 2560 pixels high, accepts JPEG or TIFF and specifies RGB colour. That is a Kindle example, not a universal size for every bookstore.

Width comes first in many design tools, while a platform may list height first. Check the orientation before exporting. A portrait canvas entered the wrong way round can produce a landscape image with the same two numbers.

When adapting artwork, preserve proportions. Cropping or extending a background may be appropriate; stretching a face or lettering to fill a new canvas is not. Ask whether important details sit too close to an edge before choosing the final composition.

Pixels, aspect ratio and resolution are different things

Pixel dimensions describe how much raster information a file contains. Aspect ratio describes its shape. Resolution connects those pixels to a physical output size. Changing the resolution field alone does not add detail to a small image.

For a calculation example, a 6 × 9 inch front cover at 300 pixels per inch is 1800 × 2700 pixels. This is only the front panel before bleed; it is not a complete paperback upload file or an instruction that every printer uses that setting.

A useful check is to view the artwork at its intended output size and inspect edges and lettering. A sharp title pasted over a low-resolution picture does not make the picture suitable for print.

Paperback size: trim, spine and bleed

The trim size is the size of the finished pages. The spine joins the front and back and depends on the actual book block. Bleed extends background artwork beyond the cut edge; safe areas keep text away from cuts and folds. They solve different problems.

Finalize the interior before preparing the wrap. Changing the page count after cover production may change the spine and the overall width. Use the KDP cover calculator for a KDP edition, or the template supplied by your printer. A hardcover needs its own template.

  • Confirm binding, trim size, paper and final page count.
  • Build on the correct template and keep guides separate from artwork.
  • Check the spine, back-cover wording, barcode area and all safe zones.
  • Remove template marks from the export and inspect the platform preview.

Check the cover at thumbnail size too

Technical acceptance does not tell you whether the title is readable. View a small version beside other books in your genre. The main title should remain easy to recognize without having to zoom in.

Check contrast where the letters cross the artwork. A title may look clear against one part of a photograph but disappear against another. A quieter text area can help more than simply adding another effect. Our guide to designing a book cover explains how to assess the composition.

What to send with a cover order

Send the exact title, author name, planned format and the platform specifications. A premade book cover at CoverPlace costs $69 and includes the chosen front design personalized with your wording. A spine, back cover or full print wrap must be agreed separately before payment. From the catalog preview alone, do not assume a particular print-ready size.

Keep your source file and final exports clearly named by edition. Before uploading, compare the dimensions, format and colour settings with the destination’s current guidance, then use its preview tools. Order a physical proof when producing a print edition.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a standard book cover size?

No. Ebook stores set image specifications, while printed covers depend on the edition and printer. Choose the destination and format before creating the final file.

Can I use the same cover for an ebook and paperback?

You can reuse the artwork if suitable, but the delivery files differ. A paperback also needs a correctly sized spine, back cover and bleed.

Does changing a file to 300 DPI improve it?

Changing a metadata value alone adds no image detail. For print, calculate the pixel dimensions from the intended physical size and inspect the original artwork.

Is the catalog preview the file I should upload?

No. A catalog preview is for choosing the design. Agree the final production specifications and use the delivered file.
