How to add music to a video

Add a song to a video on mobile or desktop, sync cuts to the beat, balance music under dialogue and avoid preventable copyright claims.

September 30, 2026 · 9 min read

To add music to a video, place the video and audio on separate timeline tracks, line up a strong beat with a meaningful cut, set the level and export. The buttons are easy; choosing music you can legally publish and keeping dialogue clear are the parts that make the result professional.

Choose the right workflow

Every editor uses the same basic structure: pictures on the main track and music on an audio track. Pick the publishing destination before you start, because aspect ratio and music licensing can change from one platform to another.

Add music to a video step by step

Prepare a clean excerpt first if the source track is much longer than the video. Our guide to trimming a song covers clean edit points, fades and export formats.

  • Create a project in 9:16 for vertical video, 16:9 for standard YouTube or 1:1 for a square post.
  • Import the video first, then add the original song file as a separate audio track.
  • Find the first clear downbeat or vocal entrance and add a marker. Move the key visual cut to that marker.
  • Trim the music to the useful section and add short fades so the beginning and ending do not click.
  • If the video contains speech, begin with music around 10–20% in the editor and adjust by ear on a phone speaker.
  • Watch the entire export with headphones and a phone speaker before publishing.

Mobile and desktop methods

On iPhone or Android

Open a video editor that supports separate audio tracks and choose Audio, Music or Import. Pinch to zoom into the waveform before placing a cut. Two or three intentional beat cuts usually look stronger than changing the shot on every beat.

A song in an app’s built-in catalog is not automatically cleared for every use. A track licensed for an organic post may still be unavailable for an advertisement or on another platform.

On a computer

In a desktop editor, display the audio waveform and place markers on section changes rather than every peak. Use volume keyframes or automatic ducking to lower the bed under dialogue.

For a video already uploaded to YouTube, the official YouTube Studio instructions explain how to add, move and trim an Audio Library track in the browser.

Make the edit feel musical

For a release campaign, build several aspect ratios from the same visual system. Our cover animation service delivers artwork-led video designed for music promotion.

  • Cut on the first beat of a new section when the story also changes.
  • Alternate wide and close shots instead of using speed alone to create energy.
  • Leave a brief visual pause before a drop; contrast makes the next cut feel bigger.
  • Start a promo with the hook, chorus or strongest lyric rather than a long intro.
  • Use a short fade or room tone under the final frame instead of stopping the song abruptly.

Copyright: which music can you use?

A streaming subscription does not grant permission to synchronize a recording with a video. A platform can identify even a short excerpt, and writing “no copyright intended” or crediting the artist does not create a license.

The safest choices are your own music, written permission from the rightsholder or a properly licensed library. YouTube Audio Library includes tracks for videos; some Creative Commons tracks require the supplied attribution in the description.

Read the license for the exact use. Music cleared inside Instagram may not be licensed for a paid ad, a client website or YouTube. Keep a copy of the license or permission with the project files.

Pre-publish checklist

  • Speech remains effortless to understand on a small speaker.
  • The track starts and ends cleanly, with no click or accidental silence.
  • Text and logos sit outside each platform’s interface safe zones.
  • You can document the right to use the music for this publication.
  • The export preserves the intended aspect ratio and source frame rate.

Frequently asked questions

How can I add music without a watermark?

Use an editor that allows a clean standard export or the platform’s own editor. Make a short test export first because free-plan rules change.

Can I use a popular song if I credit the artist?

Credit is not a license. Use it only when the platform licenses that song for your type of post or the rightsholder has given permission.

Why did the music disappear after upload?

The platform may have identified protected audio or restricted it for your region or account type. Check the rights notice and replace the track if needed.

How loud should background music be under speech?

There is no universal number. Start around 10–20% in the editor, then test on a phone speaker; every word should remain clear.

Need a motion cover?

A ready-made motion cover from $15, a custom animation from $50. You get an MP4 1080×1920 (9:16) for Stories, Reels and Shorts.
